Evaluation!

Continuation of Silde 1. In a recent film, Jack Reacher, the opening creates tension for the first five minutes using many close up shots and quick cuts. this proves to be effective in keeping the audience unaware of what is happening. the use of close ups was something we were keen to develop on. we felt that the close ups helped to increase the tension as it makes the field of vision of a space smaller, and therefore there is less (and in someways more) for the audience to see.

Explanations of Some of the shots shown on slide 8.

We used over the shoulder shots to increase tension as you can not see a persons face, therefore it would hopefully leave the audience wondering who was holding the 'crime reports'. In this first clip shown we used a variety of props in order to create tension.

The two person shot was used to show the characters and their relationship with each other.

we used a close up in our video to show the emotions on one of the characters face. we did this through use of sound as well initially, but towards the end of our editing we decided to leave out the sound.

in the mid shot, we made sure to show the two characters in relation to their setting to show how vulnerable the female character was.

in the two long shots we highlight how alone both of the female characters in the video are in this opening. it helps to make the viewer feel pity for the character.

the use of the close up POV shot is meant to again create tension for it is unsure whos eyes you are looking through, this is similar with the long POV shot. It is meant to make the viewer question who the characters are, whether they are a villain or not.

finally we used an establishing shot to establish the setting, this shows just how isolated the characters are in the shot, and we used it to create tension as it is shown that there is no one around. This is often used in thrillers, for example in Jack Reacher, the villain chooses a location which has not been used in a while, he chooses a 'quarry pit' where only he knows where the girl is. Typically of a thriller there is a girl who must be rescued. Though unlike other films the girl often dies, we went with this for our thriller.
